In October 2001, the Drug Treatment Court Commission was initiated by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. To institute a system of drug treatment courts statewide, the Commission will establish uniform standards and procedures. The Commission also will assist local jurisdictions in setting up drug treatment courts by providing technical assistance, training, and other support. Programs for such courts will be coordinated and evaluated by the Commission so that they function efficiently statewide.
Appointed by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, Commission members include Circuit Court judges, District Court judges, legislators, and representatives from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, a State's Attorney's office, the Public Defender's Office, the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention, the Maryland Association of Public Health Officers, and providers of addiction treatment services.
